A Crow Left Of The Murder Zip In: A Review of Incubus' Alternative Rock Album

While digging through some journals from quite a few years ago, I stumbled onto the sketchbook/journal I was keeping during the process of making the Incubus album ‘A Crow Left Of The Murder’. It is small, bound in leather and covered in random stickers from around the world. I usually meet these time capsules with a mixture of joy, nostalgia and some degree of emotional reticence, for they have a way of yanking me squarely back into the headspace I was in around that period of time. Considering today was spent digging through about twelve old journal/sketchbooks, (I was looking for one thing, specifically) I am officially lost in a torrent of memories, emotions and feelings that I thought I’d left behind. It’s funny how that works.

A Crow Left Of The Murder Zip In

The page to the left had some dirty photos glue-sticked to it, so I will skip posting that. I bring it up only to indicate what part of “the room” my mind was wandering around in. I’ll attach a link to the song here in the event that some of you haven’t heard this Incubus offering from (circa) 2004. Sending you all lots of Love from California.

Crows are members of the Corvidae family, which also includes ravens, magpies, and blue jays. Loud, rambunctious, and very intelligent, crows are most often associated with a long history of fear and loathing. They are considered pests by farmers trying to protect their crops and seedlings. Many people fear them simply because of their black feathers, which are often associating them with death. But research demonstrated in A Murder of Crows proves crows are actually very social and caring creatures, and also among the smartest animals on the planet.

Crows are predators and scavengers, which means that they will eat practically anything. Their diet consists of various road-kill, insects, frogs, snakes, mice, corn, human fast food, even eggs and nestlings of other birds. An adult crow needs about 11 ounces of food daily.

Crows are very social and have a tight-knit family. They roost in huge numbers (in the thousands) to protect themselves from enemies like red-tailed hawks, horned-owls, and raccoons. Crows also use at least 250 different calls. The distress call brings other crows to their aid, as crows will defend unrelated crows. Crows mate for life.

Roske, according to news reports, was angry that the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade this month. He faces charges of attempting to kidnap, murder or threaten a federal judge. (This incident came after a judge was recently zip tied and killed in his Wisconsin home; a former defendant in the judge's courtroom has been charged.)

The day before the arrest Wednesday, I testified in the Senate Judiciary Committee on new legislation in which Democratic members are seeking to force the FBI to prioritize the investigation of white supremacists for terrorism. In the hearing, senators attacked Fox News and political opponents for fueling terrorism with their rhetoric. (For the record, I am a Fox contributor.) Some of us were attacked in the media for noting that extremist violence, including lethal attacks, have come from both the left and the right.

While I believe that parts of the Democratic bill are unconstitutional and threaten free speech rights, I agree with the condemnation of extreme rhetoric. However, such condemnation should acknowledge the extreme language used on the left as well as the right.

Some politicians have also taken lightly far-left militants Antifa, a large anti-free speech movement. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerrold Nadler has called the 2020 Antifa violent protests in Portland, Oregon, "a myth."

For her part, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke loudly when she failed to condemn left-wing mobs destroying statues and historic displays in her home city of San Francisco. Pelosi shrugged and said, "People will do what they do."

Joshua McCormick, 22, of Elmira, offered to testify against Coggins, also of Elmira, as part of a plea deal with the prosecution, an arrangement that reduced his first-degree murder charge to a first-degree manslaughter charge.

McCormick, at the prosecution's request, recounted the events that led up to April 17, 2013, the date in which he, Steven Todd and Ricky Knickerbocker were allegedly led by Coggins to invade the 232 Wheeler Hill Road, Town of Carroll, residence of Gordon and Joyce Skinner, and murder the couple in the process.

According to McCormick, the foursome dressed in hoodies and left the apartment in Brown's Pontiac Grand Am on the evening of April 16, 2013. Stopping at a local Wal-Mart, they bought a crow bar and stole gloves and a handful of zip ties.

Coggins, he said, broke through the door window with the same crow bar, found Joyce Skinner inside and tied her hands with zip ties. The witness further claimed he saw Coggins dragging her down the stairs before tying Gordon Skinner to a chair and putting him in a choke hold.

As detailed in the affidavit, a search of the seized suitcase and backpack revealed a black tactical chest rig and tactical knife, a pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crow bar, pistol light, duct tape, hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, and other items.

If convicted, Roske faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for attempted murder of a United States Judge. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The health of African-Americans was constantly under attack on the plantation and under Jim Crow; and it is still under fierce fire from the war on drugs. AIDS is the leading cause of death for young blacks and Latinos. Although blacks make up only 12% of the population, they account for 41% of U.S. citizens with AIDS.20 Black and Latino adults and adolescents represented 67% of the AIDS cases reported in 1999. African-American and Latina women together represent less than one-fourth of all U.S. women, yet they account for more than three-fourths (77%) of AIDS cases reported to date among women in our country. HIV/AIDS remains among the leading causes of death for U.S. women aged 25-44.21 Sixty-five percent of African-American women who are HIV positive have contracted the disease because somebody shared a needle.22 Most advanced democracies have implemented harm reduction policies, including needle exchange programs to prevent the spread of AIDS and other blood transmitted diseases. However, U.S. drug policies block funding for clean needles, and some states like New Jersey arrest anyone attempting to provide clean injection equipment using private funds. These murderous policies exact a high price from minority populations in the United States.

They also found a host of burglary tools, including a hammer, a screwdriver, a nail punch, a crow bar, a pistol light, duct tape and a pair of hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, among other items, prosecutors said.

According to a criminal complaint charging Nicholas John Roske with attempted murder of a federal judge, two U.S. Deputy Marshals spotted Roske get out of a cab in front of Kavanaugh's home at approximately 1:05 a.m. He looked at the marshals and then walked down the street. Not long after, Montgomery County got the call from Roske saying he was suicidal and came to kill Kavanaugh.Montgomery County Police Department officers were dispatched and arrested Roske without incident while he was still on the phone with 911, according to the affidavit. In his suitcase and backpack were a Glock 17 with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, a tactical knife, a hammer, a screwdriver, a crow bar, zip ties and duct tape, along with other gear.

Roske, 26, is from Simi Valley, California, according to a Department of Justice press release. He was charged with attempting to kidnap or murder, or threatening to assault, kidnap or murder, a Supreme Court justice.

Police inventoried the backpack and the suitcase and found a tactical vest, a tactical knife, a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, a crow bar, pepper spray, zip ties, duct tape and other items, the affidavit said.

A mob lynching was a brutal and savage event, and it necessitated that the lynching victim be seen as equally brutal and savage; as these lynchings became more common and more brutal, so did the assassination of the black character. In 1900, Charles Carroll's The Negro A Beast claimed that blacks were more akin to apes than to human beings, and theorized that blacks had been the "tempters of Eve." Carroll said that mulatto1 brutes were the rapists and murderers of his time (pp. 167, 191, 290-202). Dr. William Howard, writing in the respectable journal Medicine in 1903, claimed that "the attacks on defenseless White women are evidence of racial instincts" (in blacks), and the black birthright was "sexual madness and excess" (Fredrickson, 1971, p. 279). Thomas Dixon's The Leopard's Spots, a 1902 novel, claimed that emancipation had transformed blacks from "a chattel to be bought and sold into a beast to be feared and guarded" (Fredrickson, p. 280).

In 1905 Dixon published his most popular novel, The Clansman. In this book he described blacks as "half child, half animal, the sport of impulse, whim, and conceit...a being who, left to his will, roams at night and sleeps in the day, whose speech knows no word of love, whose passions, once aroused, are as the fury of the tiger" (Fredrickson, 1971, pp. 280-281). The Clansman includes a detailed and gory account of the rape of a young white virgin by a black brute. "A single tiger springs, and the black claws of the beast sank into the soft white throat." After the rape, the girl and her mother both commit suicide, and the black brute is lynched by the Ku Klux Klan. This book served as the basis for the movie The Birth of a Nation (Griffith, 1915), which also portrayed some blacks as rapist-beasts, justified the lynching of blacks, and glorified the Ku Klux Klan. Carroll, Howard, and Dixon did not exceed the prevailing racism of the so-called Progressive Era. 2ff7e9595c
